Well, we put to rest another year. I Hope all had a happy and safe holiday season. I don't know about you, but doesn't it seem that this winter has been darker than others in the past? Maybe I am just getting older, but it seems that way to me. December was filled with friends, food, extra sleeping and making exciting plans for 2010.
I started the New Year off right by going to an auction on New Year's Day. It was out in the country and I thought I would be the only one there. Unfortunately for me, the place was PACKED! It was an old-fashioned country auction with antique furniture, prints and glass, even and old horse drawn buggy! Prices seemed good to me, and my friend Anne made out like a bandit on some nice things for her shop. But, I made the big score! I bought an Art Deco lamp, which must have been from a store or theater display. The auctioneer told us all it was from the 1939 New York World's Fair. But, then again, he was selling African and Filipino baskets as 19th century Native American. (I suggested they were from the Black Sheep tribe.)
Anyway, back to my lamp. She is of the period of the NYC 1939 fair, but I am still researching if she is from that event or made for a different venue. Any info anyone can pass along to me would be greatly appreciated. She is 74 inches tall, heavily weighted base and she seems to be made of a composite similar to mannequins. The bad news is someone spray painted her with silver paint and the globe has been replaced. I am going to restore her once I figure out what she originally looked like. Nevertheless, I love her as she is. I have a soft spot for older women in heavy makeup.
